Brand new here - I have a question about a bread recipe from the catalogue?
Hi - I want to make the french Herb bread found in the catalogue but I don't see that there's any sugar in it for the yeast.... Does it rise adequately without it? It sound delicious otherwise, but I'm puzzled by the lack of sugar..
thanks in advance for your comments!!

Many breads don't have any sugar in them at all. The starch in the
flour will get broken down into sugars that the yeast can use.
My mother-in-law used to throw a pinch of flour in with her yeast when proofing it, not a pinch of sugar.
All it really takes to make bread is flour, water, salt and yeast.

He's right, kimkats. In fact, French bread (in France) can contain no other ingredients other than flour, water, salt and yeast, and while many other breads have many other ingredients, sugar is not necessary at all.

Thank you both very much! I'm just used to seeing a tablespoon of sugar or so in bread recipes for the yeast to eat,so I was a little puzzled. Thanks again, and I'm off to try it! :)
