KAF recipes

Has anyone looked at at KAF recipe today?

The format has changed. I think I like it. The recipes appear to be clearer to read. The recipes with options for weight or volume now have volume, grams, ounces toggles and it appears to be very simple to switch back and forth.

Kudos, PJ and friends!

I like! Having the directions at the side instead of below the recipe is a little odd but I'll get used to it. I LOVE the toggles!

However it keeps trying to "store data for offline use". So far I just tell it no every time. What data are you trying to store for offline use, guys? Hmmmmm? I haven't told it "never" YET but I don't want it storing anything on my computer that I don't know about and agree with.

You are right Carol. It looks very good and even my grams are there for the clicking.(LOL). Indeed a big "thank you " to PJ and all the computer people.

I hadn't looked until I saw your post, so I toddled on over there to have a see. I really like it! My favorite improvement (so far) is the new way to browse recipes. The categories, combined with pictures, just seems much cleaner and user friendly. Before, it seemed when I would click over to a recipe, I'd lose track of where I had started.
Oh dear, does this mean I'm going to be spending even more time on this site?
Going back now to find a blueberry pie recipe. We picked 24 pounds of the little beauties yesterday.

LOL, tarragon,

I hadn't even looked that far. My DH had asked for brownies, so that's how I found out. I'm off to browse recipes :-)

i may be in the minority, but i love the ingredients on one side and directions on the other....when i copy a recipe, i do it that way, so this is perfect for me!....also agree that the recipes seem to look a bit clearer.

edit: just discovered that some of the recipes are still in the top/bottom format rahter than the side-by-side...i wonder why?

the conversion must have been an enormous job....many thanks to the computer wizards!

Well I have to ask, Zen, what are "toggles" ?

I asked about this today, actually - I got annoyed at it popping up so just said yes, and it stopped. I haven't got an answer yet (yes, everyone's been REALLY busy stamping out some of the major bugs that inevitably appear in a project like this), but I'd wager the data storage is stuff like "remember me" when you log in for your recipe box, stuff like that. We're not into capricious invasions of privacy for nefarious reasons around here, luckily! But I'll totally find out what it means at some point, and come back and post here...

And yeah, love the grams and three-way toggle. Metric weights was the #1 feature readers requested in our polls here and on Facebook, so YAY for grams! :)

Recipes posted before 2008 (I believe that was the date) were done in a different module on the computer; recipes since then are posted in a totally different way, and include min/max times, a different layout, etc. SOMEDAY - maybe in my golden years of retirement, HAHA - I'll convert ALL the old recipes to the new format. But until then - yup, the old ones will look one way, the new ones another. And - thanks for your kind comments!

I really like the new format too. It looks cleaner and easier to read now. Plus I love that we can get measurements in grams now!

I just noticed the printable version of recipes still only lets you choose between volume and weight in ounces.

Those are the little round things that you click on to select "volume", "ounces", or "grams". It puts a bullet in the center of the one you select, and you can only pick one, which in reality makes them "radio buttons" and NOT "toggles". A toggle lets you turn one or more options on ("toggle on") or off ("toggle off") without regard to the value of other associated fields. The radio button lets you pick only ONE of the available values.

Sorry, it's computerese, and it was WRONG computerese at that. Hey, I was on the bleeding edge of technology for a long time, I've earned the right to be a Luddite in my old age, LOL!

Nice catch, placebo! I'll add that one to our "post-launch fixes" list.

Glad you like the new format - it's a project the entire team has been working on for some time - so it makes us really happy to know that our customers are enjoying the improvements.

PJ is correct. This is an HTML5 feature, that essentially allows your web browser to store more information locally, and should improve the speed and performance of the site - very important for visitors on a mobile phone or slow connection. As far as I know, only Firefox displays this message.

OK, it should cause no problems to turn it off permanently then. There's enough junk on this computer without adding mysterious stuff that I don't have a handle on to it, LOL!

I was checking things out last night, and they looked pretty good, except the "bake what's in your pantry" results displayed kind of haphazardly -- photos and recipes names were jumbled on the page, but I figure the kinks are still being worked out (just like it took a long while to work out the kinks here). Today I was disappointed to see that a recipe that displayed just fine yesterday (and where I left a review) now shows up like this:

PJ, it appears there may be a problem with the new recipes search engine. I tried searching for 'Italian Supermarket Bread' and got a similar error, and I got it for some other searches as well, such as a recipe that came up when I searched for 'baguettes' and then tried to bring up the 'classic baguettes' recipe.

I get a different kind of error if I try to bring up the 'classic baguettes and stuffed baguettes' recipe.

It's the recipe for double-shot mocha chunks. Turns out I can view the recipe if I come in through my review on my personal page.

Thanks, Mike - we've identified the problem and have fixed 23 recipes so far that all had a common error in their URL; trying to figure out what's up in the couple of others we've found. Bottom line - thanks for your feedback, we're working on it. Take care-

I also like that you can chose grams (much easier to divide than ounce.) I did discover that the quick beer pizza crust did not have a link to the blog (Sorry, have been busy this weekend and didn't have a chance to check out some of my other favorite recipes) I am hoping that this is an oversight. The ability to see a recipe and then knowing I can check out the blog is a plus for me. Gives me a better idea of how the recipe will turn out, and a greater chance I will try it.

PJ,

Someone mentioned that some of the recipes don't have the "blog" link. I just went to the blog for the lemon lime cupcakes and clicked through to the recipe. When I went to click the "baking banter" link, there was none. The fudge brownies, however, do have the link - if you click on the description where it says "more."

You might want to make sure the blog links are prominent. I also had an error message when I was on one recipe and tried to search another. I was too tired to post it - if I get it again, I will definitely post it.

Thanks, Carol

Hi PJ,

I was just on the lemon lime cupcake recipe (I'm planning to make them today) and then typed in "Mocha Madness Ice Cream" in the search bar right above. I got this error message similar to the one I had yesterday. I use Safari (completely up to date). Hope this helps.

Wishing all at KAF patience and peace as you debug. I wrote today to let you know the Classic Whole Wheat bread recipe has ww bread recipe, bakers tips for a cake and reviews for granola. I think once the dust settles we're going to love it!

The banana bread has the same issue.

I wish I could be as positive as everyone else, but I'm not really a fan of the new layout. The categories feel like they were layed out by a computer person who isn't necessarily a cook or a baker. I don't particularly find it as easy to navigate either. I realize I'm only one voice that isn't a fan, so it really doesn't matter, but for me it's not just a matter of working out the kinks and then I will love it. I work in IT, so I understand the work involved. I'm just not catching the improvements all of the work was supposed to accomplish. It also feels less like "King Arthur" (which I have come to see as having an exceptionally high standard of excellence) and more like Gold Medal or Pillsbury (which I see as more main stream - an ok product, but not up to the standards of King Arthur).

Sorry. I will sign off now. Perhaps I should have kept my opinions to myself; I've been debating since last weekend whether to post or not...

I will continue to visit your website because I love your recipes so much. And I'm sure I'll get used to the new layout. I hope you don't mind my honesty...

The ratings are messed up too -- I was looking up bread recipes and the first couple of ratings were for granola. They must have been placeholders of some kind, because they didn't change when I clicked to the next page of ratings, though ratings below changed. Also, the "tips for bakers" are messed up -- I'm seeing tips for cakes and/or frosting when I'm looking at bread recipes. Again, probably some kind of placeholder issue.

Ooops, I see someone already posted about this problem -- somehow I missed it when scrolling. But I'll leave this up, even though it's repetitive, so the IT folks know that there are multiple people experiencing this problem.

I just checked out a pizza crust recipe.. It was the KA guaranteed one.... The tips were for a yellow cake, tdjen there were a couplemofmtipsmformthe pizza crust.

BTW... I love the way you can click and get directions for volume, ounces and grams. So easy to use.
Now... Wen my new scale comes...I can use volume for things like water, yeast and sat, but use ounces for the flour.

I do like the new format... It's clear, and easy to see/read.

The new format is very nice. But please bring back the link "email a question about this recipe to the bakers". On the old format there was both an email link and a live chat link. Now only the live chat link remains. Thanks. Susan
