Photos Within Threads

I have adjusted pretty well to this site. I just wish there were an easily explainable (and hence understandable) way to post a photo in a thread that we start. It can't be a security issue since we can add a quick photo without delay. I'm just saying . . .

DL,

Goodnews: you can add a photo to a post (or comment)! There's a discussion about it in the comments of this post:

http://community.kingarthurflour.com/content/adding-photos-have-you-trie...

In short, you would need to upload the photos to a photo hosting site (the KAF album works fine for this) and then copy the website address for it (usually you can right click on the photo you've uploaded and select "Copy link location). Then you would type the following, putting that link at the end:

img src="http://www.yourwebaddresshere.jpg"

You also need to put < at the beginning and > at the end of that string. Doing it that way doesn't resize your photo, so if it's too big it may get cut off by the column of blank space on the right side of this page. There is another way of posting photos where you can add your own sizing, but that starts to get a bit more complicated. I'll be happy to post/explain that way if you're interested!

ROTFLMAO, Does that answer make it easy for you DL? I'm working from my iPad. I cannot right click and what I CAN do is limited. All my pictures are on my iPad. I am very computer challenged at my age. I think I do pretty good, but still, the answer has me scratching my head. I want to select a picture from my iPad and click on the spot in my comment where I want it to go. Why can't I do that?

~Cindy

Mike Nolan

It MAY be the iPad's fault.

We did some experiments this summer on a website I work with, and the browsers on certain models of the iPad did not work properly with several websites. Updating the software on the iPad sometimes fixes the problem, but not always.

We saw this problem on both iPad 1's and iPad 2's.

It appears the iPad's browser is somewhat limited and does not implement the full HTML4 language. Frames seem to cause the most problems, especially with scrollbars.

KAF_Keri

Cindy,

I agree with Mike - unfortunately this kind of thing is one of the limitations of the iPad. I have one that I use all the time and bring with me everywhere - it's great for taking notes, for the applications, for browsing the internet, but it's definitely deficient at more in-depth uses like posting images, manipulating text.

I know you can press on an image, hold your finger there for a second, and a menu will pop up. Usually that menu has a "copy" feature. I'm thinking that might copy the URL (website address) you need, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll play around with it tonight to see if I can figure it out.

Sorry, Keri, I know I am not real computer smart but I am still at a loss so I will continue to post pictures to my personal page. Know the problem is with me and not your explaination or the program. bb

KAF_Keri

Berwynbaker,

Would it help if I did a step-by-step walkthrough with photos? I could post it in my photos so you can see how I do it. If you think that would help just let me know what kind of internet browser are you using (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc).

~Keri

mrscindy

Keri, you solved one of my problems!!! Yay!!! I have not been able to discover a reliable way to pull up the copy feature. I just kept touching and playing around with it until it came up. (told you I was very challenged!!!) Well, the touch and hold solves my problem. Thank you. Now things are a little easier! On to more important matters. I have baking to do!

~Cindy

KAF_Keri

Hurray! So glad I could help. iPads are intuitive in so many ways, but when there are so few buttons it can definitely be limiting. If you ever had techie questions don't hesitate to let me know. Even if I don't know the answer I'll definitely do my best to find out!

Keri, Thank You for your kind offer. I know that you are getting ready to have surgery next week so please don't worry yourself with this minor problem of mind. I am leaving town for a few days and will not be here to follow along anyway. I will have my husband read not only this discussion but the other as well once we are back in town and see if he can help me. Computers are easier for him to understand than they are for me. Thank you again. Please take care, prayers and good thoughts are coming your way for a speedy recovery. bb

dachshundlady

Do you put the quotes in that string?

dachshundlady

And do you type in jpg? I can't tell what is literally required and what should by my pasted thing.

KAF_Keri

DL,

The parts that are required are the at the end. The part that you paste goes in between the quotation marks.

~Keri

PS: I posted a note on your BC account page.

mrscindy

Thank you, Keri, that is so nice of you to make that offer. I really appreciate it. If something comes up and I find myself stumped, I will call on you!

In the meantime, you are getting ready for surgery next week, so don't worry about our little problems. Concentrate on taking care of yourself! All our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery are flying your way. Please keep us posted and let the BakingCircle know if there is anything we can do to keep you smiling! :-))

Yes, I'd definitely like more details on how to resize the images.

I was able to resolve my problem with the Challah thread by cropping the photos and rotating one of the images, but if there are other techniques they might be useful to know.

KAF_Keri

Mike,

Will do - details to follow in soon. I'll use your double-braided Challah recipe for an example.

~Keri @ KAF

Mike Nolan

If you want, the original image is still available at:

http://romaine.tssi.com/bread2/129.JPG

KAF_Keri

Mike,

Please forgive my long-windedness with this, but here are the details on resizing images. I ended up using a photo of my cat as an example, because I wasn't sure if you'd want me to post your image location here. The picture of my cat, Kami, is posted here:

http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/larg...

When the image was posted on that page the code looked something like this (you just have to add < at the beginning and > at the end of this code for it to post the picture):

img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG"

Now we’re going to expand on that to add sizing. First you need to know the original width and height of your image. Once you have uploaded the image to a website right click on it and select Properties or Image Info (depending on which web browser you are using) to find this information. The width and height dimensions are usually written in pixels. That image is 377px wide × 382px high (px = pixels). With sizing details the image’s code looks like this:

img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG" width="377" height="382"

And the picture looks like this:

To make the image half the original size, you would halve the pixel dimensions in the code. The string would then look like this:

img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG" width="189" height="191"

Using that code the image would display like this (just make sure to add < at the start and > at the end):

To double the image you would double the pixel sizes like so:

img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG" width="754" height="764"

The image would then display like this:

This goes to show the importance of resizing photos - so you don't end up with a giant half-cat taking up the page. Again, don’t forget to add < at the beginning and > at the end of all these so they display properly!

The alternative to resizing the image using code, of course, is to use image editing software (something as simple as Windows Paint will work) to shrink to image before you upload it to a website.

Any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks!

~Keri @ KAF

Mike Nolan

Thanks, Keri.

Is there a maximum width or height in pixels that the forum software supports? (By process of experimentation, there does not seem to be a maximum height, the maximum width appears to be somewhere between 400 and 420 pixels.)

For example, the original images I tried to post are 1024 x 768.

It is important for people to remember when scaling images that they need to maintain the original width to height ratio, or it will stretch the photo and look weird.

Testing with a loaf of Walter Sands Bread, scaled at 420 x 315, I think the right side of the black background is cut off a little.

KAF_Keri

I'm not aware of a max height limit. The last image I posted up there was 764 pixels, and that was pretty darn tall. Like you said, you do want to make sure you keep the height to width ratio the same, lest you end up with an image that resembles a carnival funny house mirror. The width limitations imosed by this website will naturally force you to limit the height, for the sake of maintaining that ratio.

mrscindy

Who cares about the picture, tell us about that beautiful loaf of bread! :-)). How does it taste? Great, I'll bet!

~Cindy lol

Mike Nolan

It's very good toasted, untoasted it has a noticable (but not unpleasant) odor from the powdered milk.

My non-fat dry milk may be a bit old, and I couldn't find my baker's special dry milk when I was making it. I'll probably try making another loaf later this week with the baker's special dry milk, but right now we still have three kinds of bread on hand, so we need to use them up, and I have two recipes on deck that I want to try, and Parker House rolls may be in the mix this week, too, because they (always!) sound good.

My wife decided that the Challah I made was an excellent dipping bread for the Boeuf Bourguignon I made on Friday, so there's not enough left to make bread pudding, so I guess I'll have to make another Challah, too. :sigh: :-)

mrscindy

Oh, my dear, dear man. How very sad for you. You HAVE to make another Challah? Parker House rolls just because? Three kinds of bread you need to eat up? Two recipes on deck to try? My heart just breaks for...........not you. My heart breaks for your poor wife! How does she choose what delectable morsel to nibble on next? And how does she keep from tipping the scales at 600 pounds? From what I understand there are only the two of you at home right now. Who eats this bread? :-))

You must be slipping breads out the back door to unsuspecting neighbors. I would be willing to be a neighbor, if you would have me. Although I make bread, I would LOVE to have someone next door making picture-perfect loaves of Challah for me. I would even be willing to take only small portions of said loaves of bread. :-)) Maybe I could come over for shaping lessons? In between tasting sessions?

Mike, you amaze me! All this bread baking. Testing recipes for PR. Beautiful photography. Talented chef/cook. Multitalented. Wow!! Your lucky wife!

~Cindy (smiling in awe)

Mike Nolan

Actually, there are three of us, our younger son still lives at home, though we keep hoping he will:

A. Find a job
B. Move out

We'd settle for either one!

I've actually scaled back on my baking a bit, I used to bake my honey whole wheat bread at least 3 times a week, recently it has been about once every 9-10 days, with one loaf going in the freezer.

Since that bread was my wife's favorite bread, and she's cut back on the amount of bread she's eating, I've had more opportunities to experiment with a few new recipes. I still like to have at least two different types of bread available most of the time, though.

BenjaminAdams

If I can chime in, you SHOULD be able to specify only the width of the photo, and then it should automatically scale the height and thus keep the original aspect ratio.

For example:
img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG" width="189" height="191"

could become just:
img src="http://community.kingarthurflour.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/Kami1.JPG" width="300"

and then we see this:

Mike Nolan

Yes, that SHOULD work, but I'm not sure if that would be handled in the web server software or at the browser level.

In either case, speaking as one who has to support several websites under a variety of browsers, it is probably safer to put in both fields when resizing images.

KAF_Keri

For anyone looking for help adding photos to Baking Circle discussions or comments, I just put a three-part walkthrough on my photo page here:

Please let me know if anyone has questions or if any steps need to be clarified. Thanks!

Keri, in part 3 of instructions, I cannot read (even with 2 pair of glasses and mag glass) what it says before the image location. I see

KAF_Keri

DL, it says the following:

img src="

But it has the < symbol before img part. And then at the end it says ">

Assuming it's the same for all web browser, here's what I do to be able to see it in larger form:
1. Go to my photo page here: http://community.kingarthurflour.com/photos/1675083/1675083
2. Click on the image itself you want to see (the actual photo, not the title of the photo underneath it).
3. When I do that I get a little popup box showing the picture. In the bottom right of that box there's an X and a little box with four arrows pointing out. If you click on the little box of arrows it should show it to you full size and be easier to read.

Hope this helps!

Ron,

What a great photo stream - I see you're a birder like me! I think your Avocet photo was one of my favorites. We are not lucky enough to find them up here in the Vermont area, but I think they are one of the most beautiful birds.

I see from your Flickr page that you have a 7D. We've been thinking about upgrading our 30D and can't decide on a 60D or the 7D. How do you like yours?

~Keri @ KAF

dachshundlady

Ron, here is my answer to your beautiful eagle photos with the blue sky background. This is our 16 year old who was born in Canada and went on our trip to New Brunswick this fall. I couldn't resist this shot to send home to our kids.

RonB

Keri - the 7D is a great camera. The autofocus is amazing if you get it set up right. They are using the 7D auto focus as the basis for the new 1DX coming out next year. That will be their top of the line camera. Try googling "bif set up 7D" or "birds in flight set up 7D".
And thanx ~ Ron
