Poppyseed streusel cake


I recently was in Germany and tasted a cake called Mohn Streusel cake. It was made up of a cake layer covered with a thick layer of poppyseed (mohn) and then a streusel layer. Can anyone suggest a recipe that would be similar? Thanks, thanks - it was delicious!

Here is a paraphrasing of the poppy seed filling for a strudel (Mohnstrudel), from "The German Cookbook" by Mimi Sheraton. I should think you could use this as the poppyseed layer in a Mohnstreusel.

Grind finely:

1/2 lb poppyseeds, washed in hot water and drained

Simmer until thick with:

1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar and 2 Tbls honey, or 1/2 cup honey

Mix in:

1 tsp powdered cinnamon
1 Tbls rum
1/2 cup raisins
optionally 3/4 cup crushed walnuts or almonds

Add until mixture is dry:

2 or 3 Tbls bread crumbs
