Share your story - winners have been chosen!

After careful consideration of the many wonderful entries we received in our “What’s Your Baking Story” contest, we’re pleased to announce that our Grand Prize Winner is brooksiefan, whose entry (below) included a signature baked good, a baking connection across generations, and a moving story of how baking helped her handle a personal loss – all elements that touched us deeply. The last sentence is what clinched it for us: “It's what I love about home baking--how it reaches down through generations, passing along comfort and joy and preserving sweet memories.”

Brooksiefan will receive an expenses-paid trip for two to our Baking Education Center here in Norwich, Vt. Congratulations, brooksiefan!

We also want to recognize second-prize winner teachingcotton, third-prize winner DaddyBread, and everyone who submitted their baking stories – proof of the power of baking to build memories and community.

Seven years ago I was missing my mother, who died in 1999, so I made her molasses cookies and had a couple with a cup of British tea, which was how she always had them, and toasted her and felt better.
I took the rest to my friends' house. Their six-year-old absolutely loved them. They are his favorite cookie. He calls them "non-snap ginger snaps," and asks for them often.
I have taught him how to make them and I feel certain he will teach his own children how to make them someday. The same goes for his sister, who loves my mother's pecan balls. She now knows how to make them, and I think she will pass them along as well.
It's what I love about home baking--how it reaches down through generations, passing along comfort and joy and preserving sweet memories.

Wow, what a nice prize, and what a touching story to win it. Congratulations to all of the winners. I joined here barely in time that I could have entered, but I have so little claim to fame in baking that anything I wrote would have sounded like a sob story. *laugh*

I was so excited to see the winning entry revealed! Congrats to brooksiefan, teachingcotton and DaddyBread.

It was incredible to read the baking stories that were submitted by so many. I hope these stories will continue to be passed down and added to as new generations learn their own joys of baking!

Congratulations to all three of you and to all the other people who wrote such moving and lovely stories. I just go back to those posts to read them over and over again and have to admit to being a little bit jealous because my mother did not bake and I did not start until about 1 1/2 years ago.But better late than never.

This is the first time I've seen this thread... The contest of peoples' baking stories.

I'll have to say, I didn't get very far before I came to brooksiefan's wonderful story, and I immediately felt I'd read the winning story! Then, thinking that I'm needed upstairs, I scrolled down to the end, and my goodness! There brooksiefan is, the WINNER!

CONGRATULATIONS, BROOKSIEFAN! Not only did you express yourself so well and from such beautiful and wonderfully warm circumstances, what I noted also was your great pleasure in sharing your recipes with those little children. Truly inspirational, in every way.
