Site updates--Thank you!

The latest updates to the site to give us control over post ordering and the number of posts on a page are great!

(You may have to do a 'screen refresh' to get the updated style sheets, I did.)

Hmmm, I'm seeing the option, I make my choices and click submit, then I get an error message....

swirth

What does the first choice box mean?

berwynbaker

Mike, thanks for the tip about refreshing the page. It worked for me.
Thank You KA for giving us a choice on the order of the postings hopefully, this will make all of us happy. bb

berwynbaker

Swirth, I played with the first option. If you choose compressed, you only see the first few words of the posting and the name of the person who posted it. The expanded choice shows the entire posting. bb

Yes, definitely do a screen refresh. Actually, we're kinda still working on this... we were discussing today whether it's useful to have the collapsed view. I voted yes, as I think it's nice, if you were trying to get to a particular person's comment in a long thread, to be able to quickly find the person's name. What do you guys think? Keep both expanded and collapsed views?

Mike Nolan

I suspect most of the time I will use the flat/expanded option, but the collapsed one is very nice too.

hickeyja

I like having both options too. I won't use the collapsed all the time, but it is great when searching for one specific comment. Thanks for the upgrade. Jan

I have refreshed the screen a few times, still get an error message when I try to submit my choices. If I can get it to work I think I'll like it!

Mike Nolan

I think it's throwing the error message but also saving the updated preferences, probably a bug they'll need to fix, hopefully soon.

ZenSojourner

I think it would be most useful if "collapsed" mode showed all posts collapsed EXCEPT new posts! If possible....

But this is a great improvement already! Thanks!

Mike Nolan

The problem is that 'new' is a relative term. What's new to you (if you haven't checked for new messages since yesterday) may not be what's new to me (if I checked an hour ago.)

That requires keeping detailed logs for each person of which forums, threads or individual posts they've looked at, and that doesn't cover people (members or non-members) who aren't signed in.

A timestamp on the collapsed format might be helpful, though.

I'm so pleased to see all this hard work in action. I also got the error message and will try refreshing the screen.

Is anyone else getting a large white space between the original post and the options? Or is it just my computer?

Thanks, PJ and crew

berwynbaker

I got that large white space until I saved my choices and refreshed the page then the white space disappeared. bb

ZenSojourner

Mike, they already do that. When you go to your personal page on the right there under your threads, it'll say "2 new" or "5 new" or whatever. The info's already there.

Mike Nolan

i don't find those indicators fully reliable, and that still only works for members who are signed in.

Mike Nolan

Do a screen refresh, that should get rid of the big empty space before the first post.

cwcdesign

TaDa! it worked (refresh the page to get rid of the white space). Thanks!

Yes, please, for the reasons you gave, PJ. Glad you're still trying to improve the site...

When I logged in today, I was plesantly surprised to see the change. This will be a big help, I think. Again, it is something to get used to, but I think it will be a step forward.

Thanks, KAF!

~Cindy 😃

Edit: How do you do a 'screen refresh'? I don't see that option. I'm using an iPad, if that makes a difference.

Cindy - the refresh button is at the end of the address box at the top of the page. The address box is where you see:

I use Firefox, and the symbol is a 3/4 circle with an arrowhead on the end. Just click on that to refresh ~ Ron

BTW - I think the "Do not send notifications for this update" just means you will not get an email for your own response even if you have subscribed to the topic ~ R

ZenSojourner

Hmmm, they've always been reliable enough for me - its just that once it takes you to the first new message, it doesn't indicate where the OTHER new messages are - but it "knows", eg it's in the database somewhere.

And yeah, you have to be signed in, that's pretty standard for this kind of thing. I don't see that as a problem.

There may very well be OTHER problems. But if it were possible on THEIR end, it sure would solve the whole "I can't find the new messages" thing on OUR end.

ZenSojourner

I think Ctl-F5 does a forced refresh

mrscindy

Yay! Thank you, it worked!

Haven't been on for weeks...just saw this. Hooray, THANKS!, PJ and all. Great improvement. Now I'll play around with it a bit.
