The Solace of Baking
I began baking when I was in high school. My boyfriend at the time had apple trees in his back yard and I decided one day to pick some apples and try my hand at baking a pie. I had never made a pie before but I was determined to do it. No one in my family made pies so I looked into cook books and found a recipe for Apple Pie. I found the Crisco can in the pantry and saw Loretta Lynn on commercials saying that her pie crust was flaky because of Crisco shortening so that's where I started. I made my first pie crust and crossed my fingers. I cut those apples and mixed them with all the spices and yes King Arthur Flour. I had gone to the store and looked at all the flours and that package just stood out at me. It looked "professional" and that was what I wanted. So I made my first pie and it was a HIT! My boyfriends Dad absolutely loved it. My family loved it and couldn't believe I had done it. Since that time I have taught myself how to bake other things. I am always the one to make the desserts for any and all occasions. I even bake 2 cakes a week for support groups I have. My clients tell everyone to come just for my cakes. I am still famous for my Apple Pies and have won blue ribbons and even raised nice amounts of money for fund raisers and benefits. I love to bake and when I feel stressed and over-whelmed with life I know I can come home and get my King Arthur Flour out and other ingredients and whip something up to help me feel calm and a sense of satisfaction. I look at baking as a way of creating something that gives me that feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. It relaxes me and soothes the stress of a very busy life and it puts a smile on my face when I see that beautiful goodie come out of the oven and then I taste it and I feel warm and happy. I love baking and I love to share what I bake with everyone I know.
