Spam
We have a couple of spams. One is Designer Handbags and the other is for Replica watches. Could these please be deleted? Thanks

Thanks for being on the lookout. I've deleted the comments and blocked the user. Much appreciated.

Would you also check out the OP on the thread about proofers. This seems an awful lot like a salesperson for the manufacturer. I could be wrong, but still.

I don't think so, Cindy, because as I recall I was the one who first mentioned the name of the maker.
A sales rep probably wouldn't be that subtle.

You are probably right, Mike. This person just seemed so insistent about how wonderful it was and had never posted before, so I was a little put off by it. Probably me just being a bit sensitive.

Mike,
Those of us who suspected proofer-box-peddling had our suspicions confirmed by "writerjax" who works for Brod & Taylor and posts three different links to Brod & Taylor and social sites where they have a presence, inviting us to "contact her" with any questions: Very "liner-closer."
It does strike me odd that the posters who rave about the merits of this box never really get involved in any conversation, they hit and run, never respond to posts they initiate and not one of them so much as has a review or recipe on their personal page. There are too many consistencies for me to call it coincidental.
That's just my gut, Mike. I could be wrong, but not usually when my insticts/impressions are this strong.I would LIKE to be wrong, in fact. The posts are very pushy, canned and all contain the same "specs" happy language.
The activity stopped for a few days, then "writerjax" gets no reply, then another "sell-job" (directed at me of all people)posts a few days later. I did not respond.
We could test it. If we stop posting in that thread, very likely it will fill-up with more of the same.
Ciao,
Gina

I know of a number of sites that sequester the first post (or first several posts) from a new member, because that keeps a lot of spam out.
It can become an administrative hassle, though, and it sometimes annoys newcomers not to see their post up immediately.
It seems like a lot of the spam shows up between about 6PM Friday and Sunday, which tells me that KAF has probably made it to the lists of the auto-spam engines, because a lot of them intentionally run in those hours to maximize the amount of time their cruft is visible before it gets chopped by a site administrator.
It's kind of an odd measure of 'success' as a web forum, though.

I thought the proofing box OP came back later with a response to omaria. But the company person was definitely selling :-)

Yes, but I think you'll find that if we leave that thread alone, the same people using the same language will be the only ones posting. They seem to pop back in when it's been quiet for a couple-few days.

So far, that hasn't happened in the proofing box thread, and the OP did post something to another thread.
The increased visibility of the Baking Circle (it shows up in Google searches) is going to bring us more one-time visitors as well as attract spammers and social media marketers.
