Why Did The Breadman Become Obsolete?
I see so many discussions about problems with the Zo when you want to actually bake with it. Now I no longer bake in my Breadman machine because I like to form my own rolls or bread. But when I was new to bread baking, I DID bake in my Breadman. And with fine results. So why is The Breadman no longer made? I bought my first from KAF around 2001 and found a second for $5 at a thrift store a couple years ago. Talk about an embarrassment of riches. Wondered if staff @ KAF knows.

Maryann, the Breadman is still out there. Check out this review of the newest model: http://breadmachinecomparison.com/breadman-tr875-2-pound-bread-maker-in-...
It even has a gluten-free setting! While KAF no longer carries Breadman, the concensus seems to be that this machine is a good buy and a decent machine. Jan

Good to know that folks can still get them. Of course since I have 2, and only use them for kneading recipes with 4 or less cups of flour, I don't need that 3rd one! Nice alternative to the Zo since it probably bakes the bread well. The old ones do.

I had a Breadman machine for years, really learned baking on it and it worked just great. Then I became old and ill and decided to give up baking. This was about 4 or 5 years ago. I just bought a new Zo. Hope I like it as well as my old Breadman. I haven't got any younger, I'm 87, but I'm sure going to enjoy baking in the time I've left.

I've heard that the Zo is great for kneading but some folks have trouble when they try to bake with it. Will be interested to hear how you do with it. I wonder if there are different manufacturers?

My breadman died after years of use. I was always reading threads of the great Zo. I bought one and like it. I find it no better than the breadman. I would get a breadman next time.

Several years ago I got a Cuisinart Convection machine . Don't know why, as I only ever use the dough
Cycle. I tried baking in it a few times but the paddle left a huge hole in the loaf. Never have tried the convection feature. I have convection with my kitchen oven as well. I must be "Old Skool" as I'm not a fan of
Convection and lately use my KA Mixer with the dough hook rather than the machine.

I still don't quite remember when to use the convection feature of my oven and when not. But I do know it is great when baking cookies since you don't have to rotate pans vertically or spin them around part way thru.

If you use the convection setting, you should set the temp 25 degrees less than called for, and it usually takes less time as well.
I don't often use the convection setting for baking because it does throw the timing off. It also tends to brown faster which for pies, cakes, isn't always ideal.
However, it's great (esp if you also have a convection roast setting) for roasting meats - gets them really nice and browned as well as speeds up the cook time. If you like crispy chicken skin, you'll like roasting it on that setting.

I bought a New Breadman BK1060S last Fall when my old Breadman died. The longer I used it the more I dislike it. The first time I used it, the paddle scraped the finish off the bottom of the bread pan. I called customer service and they sent a replacement for the damaged pan under warranty. Unfortunately, the replacement will not fit the breadmaker. I later found out that this is a very common problem with this Stainless Steel model BK1060S. On top of this problem, the longer I use it the worse it gets. No matter how I set the crust color, the side of the crust has a burned ring where the heat element is located. I have not had this Breadman 6 months. I will be calling Breadman customer service and tell them what an expensive piece of junk this had turned out to be. I just bought an Oster at Walmart that works much better than any other bread machine I have ever used and it was only $69. If you can't find it at your local Walmart they are available from the Walmart website. My friend had bought the Oster and recommended it because she also have good results with it. We both bake in the machine and it works great. I researched it on the internet and found lots of good customer reviews on it also. Personally, I will never buy Breadman again. I wouldn't pay a dollar for a truckload of them. I won't even donate or give away the one I have because of the way it is working.

How sad that their new machines are so bad. My old one was great as us the one my sister found for me in a thrift store.
